LSAP’s policy justice advocates focus on policies that affect family law issues such as dissolution of marriage (divorce), child support, child custody, parenting time (visitation), spousal maintenance (alimony), domestic abuse and paternity. LSAP’s work is dedicated to low-income Minnesotans and their children, to ensure Minnesota’s family law and policies encourage safe, supportive family relationships and promote the best interests of children.

  • In 2007, Legal Aid successfully advocated for new legislation that makes it possible for victims of domestic violence to break a lease without further liability if certain conditions are met. This legislation removes one more barrier to leaving an abusive relationship.
